Real Voices: Bright International Student Shares Life in Germany

Yesterday, Bright International hosted a special live interaction session for our IELTS and study-abroad students.

The highlight of the event was our alumnus, who is currently studying in Germany and returned to India for a vacation.

He shared first-hand insights about studying, living, and working in Germany—giving our current students a clear picture of what to expect after they begin their own journeys.

Academic & University Life

Our guest described how studying in Germany differs from India in terms of teaching style, projects, and examinations.

Students were curious about the academic system and asked:

“How different is studying in Germany compared to India?”

He explained that German universities emphasize practical learning and independent research, with fewer exams and more project-based assessments.

“Which resources helped you most during your first year?”

He highlighted professors, labs, and libraries as key support systems, encouraging students to take full advantage of the resources offered.

“Do you think knowing German is necessary for classes, or is English enough?”

His answer reassured everyone that many master’s programs are in English, but basic German greatly helps with daily life and networking.

Jobs & Career Opportunities

The discussion then moved to part-time jobs and career prospects. Students were eager to know how to balance studies with earning an income.

“How easy was it to find a student job in Germany?”

He shared that jobs are available but require quick applications and persistence, especially during the first semester, apart from that he shared the importance of networking to create reference for jobs.

“What role did German language skills play in getting part-time work?”

While some jobs require only English, he stressed that learning German increases job options and earning potential, and helps in communication with co-workers.

“Can you share tips for landing a job in Germany?”

His advice: start early, use university job portals, improve your CV, and practice for interviews, and build references

“What are the requirements to find a job?”

He mentioned the importance of having a student visa with work rights, a German bank account, and basic workplace vocabulary.

Lifestyle & Adjustment

The session also covered life outside the classroom—from housing to social life.

“How was your experience finding accommodation in Germany?”

He explained that accommodation can be competitive and suggested starting the search as soon as you receive admission, using university housing offices and online portals.

“What challenges did you face in your first year, and how did you overcome them?”

He spoke about managing finances, understanding public transport, and adapting to a new culture, adding that support from fellow international students made the transition easier.

“How did you overcome homesickness?”

His strategy included video calls with family, joining student clubs, making Indian food, and making international friends.

“What skills should we learn before going abroad?”

He recommended basic cooking, budgeting, and German language skills as essential for a smooth start.

“What’s one thing you wish you knew before coming to Germany?”

He wished he had known B1 level language and encouraged students to plan ahead.
